Frequently asked questions

What's an AI query?

An AI query is a question submitted directly to an AI engine such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. Unlike a traditional Google search, AI engines generate a direct answer that often names specific businesses, services, or providers. When a potential customer asks "best dentist in Austin" or "who fixes HVAC in Phoenix," the AI engine selects which businesses to recommend based on the structured information it holds about each one. Xomer tracks these queries monthly across all four major AI engines, measuring how often your business appears in the answer. Each tracked query is run in a fresh session on each engine to ensure accurate results. The goal is to maximise the number of queries where your business is named as the primary recommendation.

What's Share of Voice (SoV)?

Share of Voice is Xomer's primary measurement of AI engine visibility. It is calculated as the percentage of tracked queries where your business appears in the AI engine's answer. If Xomer tracks 25 queries and your business appears in 10 of those answers, your Share of Voice is 40%. Share of Voice is measured across four engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — and reported monthly. Most businesses start at 0–8% Share of Voice at baseline, before any AEO work is done. After implementing schema markup, FAQ content, and llms.txt, clients typically see Share of Voice climb to 20–40% within 60 days. Xomer tracks both Primary SoV (your business is the top recommendation) and Mention SoV (your business appears anywhere in the response), with Primary SoV as the headline metric.

Do I need to do anything myself?

Yes — implementing the changes is your responsibility, but Xomer makes it as simple as possible. You receive an implementation guide containing copy-paste ready code: JSON-LD schema markup, FAQ page content, and an llms.txt file. Your web developer — or you, if you manage your own site — pastes these into your website. Xomer provides exact placement instructions for your platform, whether you are on WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, or a custom-built site. Most implementations take a developer one to three hours. Once you notify Xomer that implementation is complete, Xomer runs a verification audit to confirm every element is correctly deployed before monthly pulse tracking begins. If you do not have a developer, Xomer can recommend implementation partners who specialise in quick AEO deployments.

How long until I see results?

The timeline depends on which changes are implemented and how quickly AI engines re-crawl your site. Schema markup and llms.txt are typically detected within two to four weeks of deployment, because AI crawlers check for these files regularly. FAQ content improvements take slightly longer — six to eight weeks — because AI engines need time to update their understanding of what a business answers best. Most Xomer clients see their first meaningful Share of Voice improvement by the end of month two. A 20–40% Share of Voice on informational queries is a realistic target by month three for businesses that implement all recommended changes. Brand query Share of Voice — when someone searches the business name directly — typically reaches 80% or higher within 60 days of complete schema deployment. Results vary by industry competitiveness and implementation completeness.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Xomer subscriptions operate month-to-month with no contracts and no cancellation fees. Monthly plans can be cancelled at any time through Stripe; access and monthly reporting continue until the end of the current billing period. Annual plans can be cancelled before the next annual renewal; no partial-year refunds are issued, but all benefits continue through the end of the paid period. Xomer does not lock clients into minimum terms because the value of the service is visible in monthly Share of Voice data — you will be able to see whether the service is working within the first two reporting cycles. If you cancel, all implementation guides and reports produced during your subscription remain yours to keep. Resubscribing at any point restores the monthly pulse cycle from the next billing date.

What if I'm already doing SEO?

SEO and AEO address fundamentally different systems. SEO improves ranking in Google's blue-link search results by building backlinks, targeting keywords, and improving page authority. AEO improves visibility in AI engine responses by giving those engines structured, machine-readable information about your business. The vast majority of SEO-optimised websites score 2–4 out of 10 on Xomer's AEO audit, because the techniques that work for Google — backlinks, keyword density — have minimal effect on how ChatGPT or Claude answer a service query. AI engines rely on schema markup, FAQ content in a specific format, llms.txt files, and entity clarity signals, none of which are addressed by standard SEO. Running both SEO and AEO is the strongest position: SEO covers traditional search, AEO covers AI-generated recommendations, which are growing as a customer acquisition channel.

What AI engines do you track?

Xomer tracks four AI engines: ChatGPT (GPT-4), Claude (Anthropic), Perplexity AI, and Google AI Overviews. These are the four engines most likely to be used by potential customers when searching for a local service provider. All Xomer plans — Starter, Growth, and Authority — track all four engines at no additional cost. Each engine is tested independently in a fresh session to eliminate contamination from prior queries. Google AI Overviews appears as an AI-generated summary at the top of relevant Google search results, while ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are standalone AI chat interfaces. Because each engine has a different knowledge base and weighs signals differently, a business can have strong visibility on one engine and zero visibility on another. Xomer's monthly pulse report breaks down Share of Voice by engine so you can see exactly where you are winning and where gaps remain.

What if my queries improve but leads don't?

AI visibility and lead generation are connected, but the correlation takes time to materialise. Improved Share of Voice means more potential customers are hearing your business name when they ask an AI engine for a service provider, but the final decision still depends on your reviews, website quality, pricing, and availability. If Share of Voice improves but leads do not follow within three to six months, Xomer's quarterly deep dive — included in Growth and Authority plans — investigates the chain: which queries are driving visibility, whether the business description AI engines use is accurate and compelling, and whether the tracked queries match commercial intent. It is also possible the business needs a stronger Google Business Profile or review base to convert AI visibility into booked appointments. Xomer adjusts the query strategy to focus on the highest-intent queries for your category.
